The book, Unbroken by Laura Hillabrand is a painful but heartwarming story of survival.  The story also shows how thousands of WWII veterans had to live and cope with the symptoms of PTSD without knowledge and treatment of the lasting effects of moral injury in life after war.  Learning about the Japanese POW camps during WWII and how our captured combat veterans suffered for years was heart wrenching.  But the increased knowledge of our history in all wars and the consequences of moral injury gives me the ability to help others more effectively and allows for my own healing to continue.

Since researching and writing my book, Reconciliation: A Son’s Story, my continued research has taken me further back into history.  The trails of warriors and homecoming challenges go back to stories of  the “Greeks inside the walls of Troy” in Homer’s Odysseus, in the book Odysseus in America, by Jonathan Shay, M.D., PH.D. http://www.amazon.com/dp/074321157X/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_til?tag=faliwipt-20&camp=14573&creative=327641&linkCode=as1&creativeASIN=074321157X&adid=07GDH95VY4KKNKPJR3QV&&ref-refURL=http%3A%2F%2Flivingwithptsd-sparkles.blogspot.com%2F

There is much to learn.  It is still hard for me to believe that I lived with denial and ignorance for so much of my adult life until age 64.  I have a feeling that others have had the same experience.  This fact keeps me on top of my game and motivated to make a difference in helping my readers and followers become more aware of the struggles and challenges of our warriors returning home to life after war.
