First alumnus, Maggie “Louie” Roe, elected to Neighbors for Kids (NFK) Board of Directors!

Roe, the newest member of the NFK board of directors, was elected to the board by a unanimous vote and seated at its July 25 meeting. Maggie “Louie” Roe, 19, newest member of the NFK Board of Directors…  We are very grateful and proud to have Louie join our team as a “Kids Zone” alumnus and the youngest board member in the history of Neighbors for Kids.  Louie knows the territory and the kids who attend NFK’s signature after-school program branded “Kids Zone.”  She and her sister Katy spent most of their childhood years attending Kids Zone from the time it was staged in a church, to a 700 sf cinder block building, and now a thriving 7600 sf facility known as one of the best after-school models in the State of Oregon.  Louie brings great experience to the NFK Board of Directors.  The timing could not be better.

Louie’s first assignment is to help NFK as an intern on updating our three-year business and strategic plan for sustainability.  We have contracted again with the Non-profit Association of Oregon (NOA) to guide the NFK Board through this very important process with the goal of achieving goals and objectives critical to long term success.  Louie helped us 3 years ago to launch the well known and successful Youth Entrepreneurship Program, “Owning your future.”  Teens learn how to build a business plan and start-up a business enterprise while taking this course, a collaboration with the Oregon Coast Community College (OCCC).  The proceeds go to the NFK Scholarship Fund, and return to kids who complete high school while attending “Kids Zone.”  Louie and sister Katy were the first recipients of $1000 scholarships each when they graduated with honors from Taft HS almost two years ago.

We are proud of  Louie’s success as a young adult who sets high standards for excellence.  NFK is even more grateful for the community support that allows us to offer kids a place to thrive during after-school hours.  The hours after-school from 3p-6p can be the most productive learning hours of the day for kids.  The NFK Board of Directors and our community of stakeholders and volunteers wish the very best for our newest board member Maggie “Louie” Roe and all the kids who join us each day during the school year and during the summer camp program…

Academic Support (AXAP)

Free tutoring and academic support are two key services we provide to the children. Students are taught important skills by caring, professional educators. Tutoring primarily focuses on reading and math, after each student has received a comprehensive diagnostic assessment. Other local volunteers spend time after school tutoring middle and high school students in various subjects. Adopt This Program
